The Development

On Tuesday the 13th November 2012 - Measham was invited to a consultation regarding the Measham Wharf Development Project

This was organised by Ideal Country Homes PLC and Leicestershire County Council.

These are the main Stakeholders for the Project.

This consortium of developers wants to dig a 1km stretch of the Ashby Canal and build up to 450 homes off Burton Road, Measham.

My first reaction is why do they call a 1km long pond or cut a Canal, and does or can Measham support another 450 homes?
The answer is, they don't care they are speculators, only profit is the motive and we will end up with a pond that will need to be filled in after a year when it is deemed to be a hazard or not sustainable with any maintenance funds.

I am also struggling to find out if English Heritage, DEFRA or any of the other agencies have been informed that another "Ridge and Furrow" earthworks are about to be lost forever?

Why is Leicestershire County Council a stakeholder at all? When......
An estimated 1,100 council posts will be cut at Leicestershire County Council over the next four years under new budget proposals.

The council has a portfolio of £137 million in loans – the Royal Bank of Scotland still holds £35 million of borrowed cash, Lloyds has £40 million while Barclays has £10 million. The remaining £52 million is temporarily invested in money market funds – investment funds which are very safe but pay a low rate of interest.
The director of the Taxpayers' Alliance, Matthew Sinclair, urged taxpayers to be wary of potentially risky investments. He said: "Taxpayers will have to make up their own minds about whether or not the difference between Leicestershire County Council's profits from loaning money to these banks, and other local authorities' hefty losses by putting money in the Icelandic banks, was the result of financial genius or simply luck."
So will the profit from the development be spent in Measham, or just go towards the ever increasing Councils portfolio?
Measham knows a lot about Ideal Country Homes PLC, as it already a major property owner in Measham High Street.

  1. As a child, I two brothers sister lived in the old station masters house , Previous occupier Mr George Sears , We took it over in the 50s and the place was abundant in fruit from Damsons .Apples Goozberries ,Strawberries Every sort of fruit we collected them parcelled them up and gave them to the loco men for coal and never did we buy any up to my formative years...We had two ways of access from the old Burton road bridge along the line and down the Tow path, We visited the cinema lots of times and got scared as during that time there were a series of Tow path murders.... The place was so exciting for a small boy and the house had 7 bedrooms no electricity but blow up Lanterns the radio was a battery set ran on eccumalators charged up at Bonus radio shop Measham..It was a beautiful hous and

I have many happy memories , I left and joined the RAF leaving both my brothers on the railway ..They should not have demolished it , Dead opposite on the Burton road was an identical house called the Croft, The farmer who owned it was a vile individual , There was an access accross the line to Burton road and my mother was ill and he denied the doctor access to see her, What a horrible individual he was... I could go on but this is a brief history..I can be contacted for more info on geoffrey.m3uxb@gmail.com...........
